The General Election has been announced to take place on Thursday 6 May 2010. Parliament was dissolved on Monday 12 April and a notice of election subsequently published.

Statutory Notices

All copies of election notices can be found on the City of Westminster website, who are the lead authority for this election.

Voter registration

In order to vote in the General Election, eligible electors must be registered. Confirmation of Voter Registration forms were delivered to all residences in the City at the end of January. The forms showed the current electoral status of each household. If the form did not contain current or new electors' details, residents can still amend the form accordingly and return it to the Electoral Registration Officer at the Guildhall as soon as possible.

Alternatively, residents not currently registered can visit our Elections - electoral register or Elections - rolling registration pages to download an application form. Otherwise, they can contact the Electoral Services office on 0800 587 5537, fax 020 7796 2621 or email Electoral Services to request an application form.

Applications to register to vote at the General Election must be received not later than Tuesday 20 April 2010.

Who can vote?

All residents who are aged 18 and over and are citizens of the UK, Ireland or Commonwealth and who appear on the current Register of Electors, may vote at this election. Please note that citizens of European Union Member states (other than the UK, Ireland, Malta or Cyprus) are not entitled to vote at this election.

Voting by post or proxy

All eligible electors have the right to organise to vote by post rather than attend their allocated Polling Station. An application form can be downloaded from our Elections - postal votes page or requested from the Electoral Services office.

Application forms to vote by post, or requests to amend or cancel existing postal or proxy voting arrangements, must be received not later than 5pm on Tuesday 20 April.

If you are unable to vote at your Polling Station on election day, you may appoint a proxy, that is, someone else to vote on your behalf. That person will be given your ballot paper at your Polling Station. Further information and an application form can be downloaded from our Elections - proxy votes page or requested from the Electoral Services office.

Application forms to apply to vote by proxy must be received not later than 5pm on Tuesday 27 April.

Poll cards

Before election day, you will be sent a Poll Card to tell you where and when you can vote. If you are a postal voter, you will be sent a Postal Poll Card informing you of where your ballot paper will be sent to and when you can expect it to arrive. People who have been appointed as a proxy will be sent a Proxy Poll Card informing them of where and when they can vote on behalf of the voter.
